EnvSense 0.1

I recently finished putting together a first version of EnvSense – a simple unit that measures and stores temperature, light and sound levels.

The main incentive behind this project is to test what wakes me up. My main hypotheses is that it has something to do with light, with the sun coming up earlier ever since we switched back from Daylight Saving Time. True, it is easier to install new blinds, but where is the fun in that? 🙂

Supplies and parts I used:

  • Arduino UNO
  • Breadboard
  • Ethernet Shield. Used for synchronizing Arduino’s Date lib with an NTP server. I also used the on board mini-SD slot for storing the sensory data
  • TMP36. Temperature Sensor
  • Sound Sensor from Seeedstudio.
  • Mini Photocell from SparkFun.
  • Ultrasonic Range Finder from SparkFun. Used as a “virtual” button – instead of looking for a physical button when I wake up, I can tell EnvSense I woke up by waving my hand
  • Piezo buzzer. Buzz if the virtual button is “pressed”
  • Red LED for showing the status
In the next version I plan on adding a CO2 sensor and measure the air quality in my office.
