On this post I will explain make a snoot that fits an Ikelite DS-50 substrobe. Please note that English is not my mother tongue so I hope I got all the technical terms right.<\/p>\n<p>I first saw the results of using a snoot for underwater macro photography a few years ago, when I met one of the most talented and creative underwater photographers I know \u2013 Keri Wilk. We participated in the annual Epson Red Sea competition \u2013 an underwater shootout that takes place in Eilat (Israel). Keri took some amazing photos using his snoots, and he later explained his technique in a blog post on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.divephotoguide.com\/underwater-photography-techniques\/article\/underwater-snoot-photography\/\">DivePhotoGuide<\/a>.<br \/>\nI wanted to experiment with snoots and build my own, but instead of using plastic tubes I decided to use fiber optic cables. With fibers, I can place the strobe anywhere and then just use the flexible Loc-Line \u201carms\u201d to point the lights anywhere I want.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what you will need:<\/p>\n<p>Supplies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ikelite DS-50 \/ DS-51<\/li>\n<li>Barrel Plugs\/ round ribbed tubing plug to use as an adapter for the snoot. I do not know the technical name for this part, but I found a nice white plug in the plumbing department in Home Depot. The one I used has a 99 mm diameter, which fits nicely on the DS-50. You can see it <a href=\"http:\/\/oren.lederman.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/snoot_plug1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">here <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/oren.lederman.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/snoot_plug2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.locline.com\/\">Loc-Line<\/a> parts (for snoot \u201carms\u201d)<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>27cm of 1\/2&#8243; segments, 1\/2&#8243; NPT Connector, 1\/4&#8243; Nozzle. Check it out on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.locline.com\/half-inch.php\">this page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>41cm of 1\/4&#8243; segment, 1\/4&#8243; NPT Connector, 1\/8&#8243; Nozzle. Check it out on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.locline.com\/quarter-inch.php\">this page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li>Solid core jacketed fiber optic cables. I ordered mine from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fiberopticproducts.com\/Endglow.htm\">Fiber Optic Products<\/a>:<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>47cm of 4mm cable (EGS4B)<\/li>\n<li>35 cm of 7mm cable (EGS7B)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li>23cm of thick (5mm) rubber band, 1.8cm wide. We will \u00a0use this piece as a spacer between the strobe and the snoot adapter<\/li>\n<li>Optional \u2013 metal\/plastic nut to secure the NPT connectors. You might need to get creative here.<\/li>\n<li>Velco straps (optional)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tools:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A small saw<\/li>\n<li>Drill<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rapidonline.com\/catalogueimages\/module\/M076430P01WL.jpg\">conical drill bit<\/a> that can make 12mm and 20mm holes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<p>First, we modify the plug to act as an adapter that connects the Loc-Line arms to the DS-50. Use a saw to cut out a piece from the side of the plug to match the bulge on the strobe and the TTL cable connect. This cut serves two purposes \u2013 it allows you to slide the strobe all the way in, and it prevents the adapter from rotating.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/oren.lederman.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/adapter1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-109\" title=\"adapter1\" src=\"http:\/\/oren.lederman.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/adapter1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"http:\/\/oren.lederman.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/adapter1.jpg 500w, http:\/\/oren.lederman.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/adapter1-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/oren.lederman.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/adapter1_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-112\" title=\"adapter1_1\" src=\"http:\/\/oren.lederman.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/adapter1_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"http:\/\/oren.lederman.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/adapter1_1.jpg 500w, http:\/\/oren.lederman.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/adapter1_1-300x266.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, carefully mark the positions where you want to place the two NPT connectors (the base of the Loc-Line arm pieces). This step is a bit tricky because you want to place them exactly above the flash tube. I used a small schematic to mark the centers of the holes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oren.lederman.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/adapter2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-111\" title=\"adapter2\" src=\"http:\/\/oren.lederman.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/adapter2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"497\" srcset=\"http:\/\/oren.lederman.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/adapter2.jpg 500w, http:\/\/oren.lederman.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/adapter2-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/oren.lederman.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/adapter2-300x298.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Use the conical drill bit to drill a 12mm hole for the 1\/4&#8243; arm and a 20mm hole for the 1\/2&#8243; arm. Screw in the NPT connectors. Don\u2019t worry if the holes are too big \u2013 you can always secure the connectors using nuts. Note that the nuts you use must be narrow so they don\u2019t scratch the strobe itself. I used \u201csoft\u201d Velcro (the loops) for both. It should fit nicely on the gray shoulders around the glass.
